About Dr. Thomas Aller

Thomas Aller, OD, FBCLA is an optometrist and myopia control specialist with more than three decades of experience in clinical practice, research, and innovation in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Throughout his career, Dr. Aller has focused on understanding why myopia progresses and how to slow it, contributing to the development and refinement of modern myopia control strategies used around the world today.

Clinical Focus
Dr. Aller works closely with children, teens, and adults whose visual needs go beyond routine eyeglasses. His primary clinical interests include:

Myopia control and myopia management for children and young adults

Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) lens fitting and follow-up

Soft multifocal and custom-designed contact lenses

Advanced spectacle lens designs for myopia control

Specialty contact lenses for complex prescriptions and presbyopia

Research & Innovation
Dr. Aller has been involved in myopia research for many years, collaborating with international research groups on optical designs and clinical protocols intended to slow myopia progression.

His work has included:

Clinical trials in myopia control

Advisory roles with companies developing myopia-control lenses

Helping refine lens designs that are now widely used for myopia management

He has authored and co-authored articles, contributed to professional guidelines, and serves on advisory boards focused on protecting children’s vision and reducing the burden of myopia-related eye disease later in life. He has 14 US and international patents in the field of myopia control and has 4 or 5 in the works.

Beyond patient care, Dr. Aller:

Provides continuing education for eye care professionals

Consults on myopia-related research and product development

Helps colleagues build or refine their own myopia control programs

Outside the Office
Outside of clinic and research, Dr. Aller enjoys exploring the Bay Area, hiking in the Berkeley hills, playing handball, perfecting sourdough and wood fired pizzas, staying active, and spending time with family and friends. He remains engaged in ongoing myopia research and advocacy, working toward a future where fewer children progress to high myopia and its associated risks.
